Power Supply Redundancy And Distribution For Machine Protection

Written by sensonics | May 15, 2025 9:00:00 AM

It is essential machine protection systems provide robust power supply configurations as normally these elements have lowest reliability. Power supplies usually run the hottest components in the system, contain the largest electrolytic capacitors and sometimes incorporate transformers and fans.

Interfacing to a noisy industrial mains AC supply also presents challenges for the convertor electronics. Whilst all manufacturers of API 670 compliant machine protection systems offer dual redundancy power supplies to overcome

We utilise the latest state of the art convertor technology which offers the highest efficiency, reducing both heat load and the filtering requirements of electrolytic capacitors. Our racking system offers a dual redundant +24Vdc backplane which can be fed from our rack based supplies or direct by the client.   We do not switch between hot and standby supplies but operate both power supplies in parallel at significantly reduced load enhancing the overall system reliability performance.

Most systems on the market provide rack power supplies generating the multiple voltages required by the protection modules. Sensonics incorporate this further voltage conversion in each of the modules, this diverse architecture provides better fault tolerance and with the direct +24Vdc backplane connection provides the client with maximum flexibility.

such issues……… only Sensonics have taken it a step further.
